This is by way of a quick catch up and a belated happy 2012 to all of you. For 3 months up until December I was working on the British Art Show 7 in Plymouth - part of a team looking after the artworks and explaining and discussing with visitors to one of the biggest contemporary art shows in Europe.

As a result I've not created a massive amount of work since mid September 2011.

But I have been experimenting with ACEOs - here's a couple of examples -

In short - as miniature artworks - they are incredibly good value for original artworks.

In the UK they are £ 9.30 each (inc postage). Anywhere else just ask and I'll quote on the current exchange rate and postage.

( as a rough guide however - in the US each would be approx $ 15.50 and in Europe 11.40 Euros ... inclusive of postage )

I've been looking at a lot of Russian and Greek orthodox icons on-line recently - I love the simplicity of the imagery - which was a starting point for this painting. I used the thick textured paint of the orange background and gouged out the outline of the face before using washes of blue over the top - this way the orange is always showing through and the image glows with the pigment behind. The heavy texture makes the painting feel as though it's actually painted direct onto a plastered surface.

This painting is another in my series of recycled works - taking a mass-produced high-street print - removing the backing board - using that to paint on and replacing it in the original frame. The frame has been sprayed black ( see below) but can always be sprayed a colour of your choice.

I've toyed with this idea for a long time - a space for me to write about art,culture and related stuff - a lot of it will be Plymouth based (especially reviews of exhibitions), but as you will see from my first post not exclusively - hopefully it will be of general interest to my blog followers.

Initially I thought about interspersing my art-work with this sort of material - but I came to a decision to clearly seperate the two things.

This is my third in a series of canvases taking traditional carved masks coupled with some form of modern clothing - this figure is based on a Native American mask ... with a load of citrus colours behind. I paint the background first without blocking the main subject - which means I have an enjoyable fight with the strength of the background showing through - but it means there is a real glow and unusual texture to the finished painting. The texture in this case is a little like a wooden fence.

This is a little bit more traditional for me. The coastline represents Cape Cornwall - not far from Lands End. I spent a lot of years around there. Cape Cornwall and the coast immediately around it is one of my favourite stretches of coastline - especially during stormy weather.

This is the first of a number of paintings I have done using old framed pictures - usually mass-produced prints. I have taken the glass out - and removed the print and mount - which generally speaking leaves the backing board. I've then used the board to paint on to - the painting has then been replaced into the frame - see image below.

I'm a great believer in recycling - so as an artist this seems a very good use of old unwanted pictures. I am sure there are others who do this -be interesting to hear...

I did this painting as a bit of an experiment while I was working on a commission - and it's been hiding in my garage (sorry ... studio) since some time in 2009. Having "rediscovered" it and had a look - it seemed a shame not to give it a public airing.

It's a bit rough round the edges, with some gouges and score-marks -as it's painted on a found piece of old plywood (that was also originally hiding in my garage) - but is quite striking (in my view) and might look quite funky in the right setting.

I haven't put a price on it - however - if you quite like the look of it make me an offer and see if we can do business.

Due to some technical difficulties this is one of the paintings bound for the Gallery Guesthouse here in Plymouth - it will be delivered next Monday. Karen asked me to produce paintings with local Plymouth / Devon themes. Hopefully people familiar with Plymouth and the Barbican will recognise this - except "the prawn" as it is known here is actually coppery in colour. I liked the idea of taking the prawn and cooking it - there should be enough here for a few thousand people.

I always said I would try to be honest with the images I post here. This painting was done a couple of weekends ago- and it seemed to take me with it - rather than me controlling it. It reminds me of some paintings from Germany and Italy in the 1920s - I'd have to go back and look at some of my books to remind myself. I am slowly working through a back-catatlogue of some paintings and experiments. This abstracted landscape was done a few months ago following a walk on a beautiful winter morning around Burrator Reservoir on Dartmoor (about 5 miles from my house). It is based on the shapes and colours of the dark coniferous plantation - little glimpses of light showing through - and a wire fence. It's not an attempt to show it for real - just to capture the feel. Not sure if it works totally. Like to hear some views.

Last weekend I did quite a lot of work as experiment for myself. I'll be posting the results over the next few weeks - as I have been offered a small exhibition space at http://www.galleryguesthouse.com/ here in Plymouth - for paintings based on local themes.
I have to work out the layout for the space - and then work on the paintings. I'll keep people updated here and on Twitter.

Back to this piece - black acrylic on white plastic. I started by making regular scrapes with the side of a palette knife and suddenly realised that the images resembled blocks of flats/apartments - so added window type marks and the suggestion of human figures inside with the knife. Then I realised that the end result also felt like discarded celluloid film. Be interested in what you think out there - I like the ambiguity, and to me the picture has an unsettling quality.

Here are the first two works from the weekend just gone. The abstract reminds me of printed 19th century wallpaper ... I think. I love the way acrylic slides around on the smooth surface - before drying rock-hard with lots of lumps and bumps.

The original coloured pencil sketch was based on a newspaper image of a locally elected official ( I think in the Carribean - can't remember now).I remember he looked a bit stuffed into his suit and tie - he was pushing his way through a crowd - I think someone was holding a poster up on the right. These 3 pictures will have to be my last posting on this blog for a few days as the laptop is going on holiday with my wife and daughter. I will have to resort to public access internet for a few days. I like these - as they are done with the cheapest materials - ie children's coloured pencils from a bargain pack from a local supermarket ( and a cheap fibre tip pen for two of them). It always makes me wince when I see the price of some artists' materials - but I suspect it all adds to the mystique of being an artist. Despite the cost -the vividness of the colour is cracking (in my opinion).

I am quite pleased of the second image - FIGURE 09/25 - as it is the first truly miniature image I have ever really put on this site. I would like to hear your views and opinions.

As promised here are 2 more colour sketches based on my sketches from the source material on African art. I am quite pleased with them as quick works - especially the first one which was done from start to finish on the top deck of a bus travelling into and back from Plymouth.

Not quite sure why the second figure has a collar and tie - just liked the idea of juxtaposing something fairly stylised/abstracted with an everyday detail.

Last weekend I finished a lot of pencil sketches from a variety of books on African,Oceanic and Celtic art. I used one of the African carved images as the basis for this colour sketch - which I might render as a bigger painting later. I have done a couple of small watercolours as well - which will probably get posted at the weekend.

I am using some of the technique and colour scheme on a large version of my monotype-self portrait ( already on this blog) - which I started today - possibly with a view to entering it into "Artists and Illustrators" annual competiton. Two experiments with materials and technique. I'm still a bit miffed - the photo does not do full justice to the colour - (this was my 3rd attempt to get them right) - especially on "Seafront".

Haven't really used water-colour for a long time - but was quite pleased with the end result for this. The individual coloured grid with linear figure is directly influenced by Paul Klee.

Apologies to all the people who have made such lovely comments on the last few posts - I intend to respond to them all this week. Truth is I haven't been feeling 100% this last week. Here's a new small image to be going on with - I have quite a few others and am aiming to post 2 or 3 times the rest of the week. I've said before here that it's been mooted that all "portraits" have a large element of "self" - well this one could certainly be looked at in that light.

Finally finished at the weekend - now up on the wall either side of the mantelpiece. Comments welcome. The most satisfying thing about these is that I painted over the top of a couple of cheap B & Q printed canvases - maybe it's the way forward to do away with the mass-produced mindless rubbish out there. ( Any offence to B &Q is ... possibly quite deliberate)

Potentially these are for sale ( like lots of my stuff) but I would like to liaise with Debbie first .

I was thumbing through a magazine and saw an article on transferred line printing – as used by Paul Klee and in some of Warhol’s early works.

It’s probably not something I’ve thought of doing since I was at school. I had to hand a black and white photocopy of my blog profile photo and off I went.

Not sure about it – but quite like the flat printed , slightly surreal quality of it. I couldn’t resist adding some red lipstick . I could see other applications for this technique which I will probably be experimenting with soon.

This was an experiment with gouache and sponge printing - and a bit of hand-tinting ( a nod to Paul Klee ) - we like it so much that it's going in a frame in one of our bedrooms !

I am nearing completion of the two small canvases for my lounge - I'll post them as soon as they are done - I have got some new faces to post as well - so plenty to come in the next week or so.

Much of my work for sale , commissions considered.

NEW YEAR - NEW WORK

Was going to post this last night - but ... didn't. This is my first experiment with one of my Christmas presents ( extra thick acrylic paints - big tubes of them !) done just before the new year. [Happy 2009 by the way - wherever you are].

They behave a lot more like oil-paints and cover the canvas really densely with first application. Am looking forward to doing some larger works with these.
