The Time is Coming

Hello all - things have been very quiet here - and there is a very good reason. At the moment I am in the middle of building a brand new website. My blog served its purpose when I first started but I have moved on and I need a better way to represent myself. I am hoping that the new site will be up and running within the next 3 weeks - but the spirit of this blog will live on.

I am also preparing for a solo exhibition in a new gallery in Plymouth in mid May

In the meantime many of you may not be aware that I have a facebook page - purely for my artwork

This is by way of a quick catch up and a belated happy 2012 to all of you. For 3 months up until December I was working on the British Art Show 7 in Plymouth - part of a team looking after the artworks and explaining and discussing with visitors to one of the biggest contemporary art shows in Europe.

As a result I've not created a massive amount of work since mid September 2011.

But I have been experimenting with ACEOs - here's a couple of examples -

In short - as miniature artworks - they are incredibly good value for original artworks.

In the UK they are £ 9.30 each (inc postage). Anywhere else just ask and I'll quote on the current exchange rate and postage.

( as a rough guide however - in the US each would be approx $ 15.50 and in Europe 11.40 Euros ... inclusive of postage )

MORE NEW WORK TO COME SOON

Regular visitors to this site may be wondering where has all the new work gone ...

Well I've had a holiday and I am now working on some new paitings for my first solo show here in Plymouth next month - more detail and the paintings here later.

However - in the meantime "Argyle Man" has now been placed on the back of the big-screen in Plymouth city-centre - the pictures below are of him and me etc. 

I am very pleased indeed as you can imagine- he'll be there until at least the end of October.

ARGYLE MAN : COMING SOON TO A BIG SCREEN NEAR YOU !!!

This painting is already on this blog - but the good news is that having submitted this image for the Big Blueprint - this has been commissioned as the next large scale banner (27' x 14') on the back of the big-screen in Plymouth city-centre ( one of only three such commissions)

Needless to say I am absolutely delighted at the outcome and cannot wait to see this looming over the crowds on Royal Parade.

I am also delighted to be following Beryl Cook and Sir Joshua Reynolds - I still can't believe it - and really hope that I can turn this into a major turning-point in my very new career path.

I may on occasion seem obsessed with men in suits - but that's maybe because I spent an awful long time being one - maybe this is my way of getting it out of my system. Loosely set on Gwenver Beach in the far west of Cornwall near Sennen Cove ( a top surfing spot ) - hence the spiky bleached blond hair... there's also the ritual mask vibe going on here as well.

This painting is a miniature - working on the basis of "waste not want not" I've used another mass produced high street print - removed the picture and used the board to paint on . I then replace the painting in the original frame. The painting is textured with a high gloss varnish finish and comes complete in its own broad moulded frame which is gold in colour at present - but can be resprayed black,white or any other colour come to that....

No canavases were harmed during the making of this painting

I've been looking at a lot of Russian and Greek orthodox icons on-line recently - I love the simplicity of the imagery - which was a starting point for this painting. I used the thick textured paint of the orange background and gouged out the outline of the face before using washes of blue over the top - this way the orange is always showing through and the image glows with the pigment behind. The heavy texture makes the painting feel as though it's actually painted direct onto a plastered surface. 

This painting is another in my series of recycled works - taking a mass-produced high-street print - removing the backing board - using that to paint on and replacing it in the original frame. The frame has been sprayed black ( see below) but can always be sprayed a colour of your choice.
